How to capture photos for 3D

Reconstruction needs overlap. Pick the recipe that matches what you're delivering, fly it once, and the model comes out clean the first time.

Quick 3D property

A house, a lot, a single structure you want to spin around.

40-60 photos

  • One orbit around the subject
  • Camera angled at the subject, not straight down
  • About 75% overlap between shots
  • Keep the subject fully in frame the whole way round
  • Keep altitude steady through the orbit

A second orbit at a different height improves results noticeably — roofs and walls both get seen.

Detailed 3D

Structures plus the ground around them: additions, grading, site plans.

100-300+ photos

  • Nadir grid over the whole area first
  • Then an oblique ring at 45 degrees around the subject
  • 75-80% front and side overlap
  • Fly the grid in one consistent direction
  • Extend the grid one pass past the area you care about

The oblique ring is what gives you walls; the grid is what gives you terrain.

Planning-grade mapping

Orthomosaics, terrain products, and measurements for planning and estimating. Not a survey.

Coverage-driven, usually 200+

  • Nadir grid, camera straight down
  • 80% front and side overlap
  • RTK or ground control points recommended
  • Even lighting, avoid hard shadow transitions
  • Consistent altitude across the whole flight

Ordinary drone GPS supports relative planning measurements. Tighter results take RTK or ground control.
